Swainsona formosa, commonly known as the Sturt’s Desert Pea, is a wildflower native to the arid regions of central and northern Western Australia. After the first rains during spring and summer, the plant blooms clusters of bright-red flowers, long and slender in form, and each with a glossy black centre known as a ‘boss’. The low-growing prostrate plant has pinnate leaves, which grow along each stem in a repeating spiral pattern. Following flowering, the plant produces a legume fruit containing black kidney-shaped seeds. In its natural habitat, the plant dies after flowering and leaves behind cracked and worn seeds from the hot climate and sand abrasion. This prepares the seeds for germination with the first rains.
