This is a study of the Australian Crested Pigeon (Ocyphaps lophotes), displaying feathers, and handwritten reference notes. I paint from actual feather reference. I adore these birds for the beautiful, iridescent hues of blue, green, turquoise, pink, and purple found on the wing feathers. When taking flight their wings make a whistling sound and on landing, they tip their tail high up in the air. During mating the male spans his tail and wing feathers, and performs a mating dance, while calling a ‘hoot hoot’ sound to lure the female.
