“This is a study of the tail feathers, from the ‘male’ Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii). I paint from actual feather reference. The male tail feather is glossy black, with a vibrant band of red. They are named the ‘Rain Bird’, because when rain approaches, they fly the sky calling a ‘karrak karrak’ sound, while displaying their colourful tails. These intelligent and social birds mate for life, and can live up to fifty years, spending their time in pairs.”
