The Purple-crowned Lorikeet is a small, colourful Australian bird, 15cm long, with green on its upper-side, light blue underneath, pale red patches under the wings, a purple crown, a yellow-red-orange forehead, and yellow-orange ear patches.
This adorable little bird loves to hang out down south of Australia. They’re found in southern and south-western Western Australia, southern South Australia, south of Victoria; and in the far south of New South Wales. They live in open, dry eucalyptus areas, usually in the flowering canopies of eucalyptus trees. They nest in small hollow spouts or holes found in eucalyptus trees.
Purple-crowned Lorikeets like to move around to feed off the pollen, and nectar of eucalyptus trees. They show little evidence of migrating and some appear to stay in much the same area all the time.
Each spring time they joyfully visit my garden to feed off the Eucalyptus torquata blossums.
