The Red Wattlebird is a loud and conspicuous songbird, native to Western Australia, and is the second largest honeyeater of Australia. Their name refers to the distinctive red wattles that hang from ear coverts on either side of the neck. They have grey, brown streaky plumage with a bright yellow belly, crimson red eyes, and a long tongue used for extracting nectar from flowers. Aggressive and territorial, the red wattlebird defends its nest and food by either calling, flying and snapping at the tails of, or scuffling with other bird species. They make a distinct ‘yac a yac’ ‘chok’ call and can be very entertaining to watch on a hot summer afternoon during a communal birdbath congregation.
