“This is a study of tail feathers, from the ‘female’ Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii). I paint from actual feather reference. The female tail feather is glossy black, with vibrant bands of orange, and yellow. They are named the ‘Rain Bird’, because when rain approaches they fly the sky calling a ‘karrak karrak’ sound, while displaying their colourful tails. These intelligent and social birds mate for life, and can live up to fifty years, spending their time in pairs.”
